The £850,000 project at the Picturedrome has been delayed and should have been underway by now.

But Bognor Regis Town Council and its contractors are about to finish all the preparations needed for workers to move on to the site on Canada Grove.

Glenna Frost, the council’s clerk, said: “The majority of snags and risks have now been assessed. We are planning the start date now and expecting work to start in early May. That is two months later than originally planned.”

The additional screen will have 114 seats and will be built behind the current Grade II listed building owned by the council.

Mrs Frost gave the update at Monday’s annual meeting of town electors. One of the town councillors, Jim Brooks, asked if safety measures could be installed to cope with the cinema’s popularity.

“The queue can be three or four wide right down Canada Grove. I wonder if a railing, or something similar, could be put in. It will only take one unfortunate motorist to jump the kerb and it will be a tragedy,” he said.
