Mayor cuts the ribbon for '˜tucked away' green space in Chichester

A new public park was officially opened last weekend, with Chichester's mayor, Cllr Peter Budge, and county council leader Louise Goldsmith on hand to cut the ribbon.

The Brewery Field, off Orchard Street, has been made a community green space following 
an agreement between WSCC and Chichester City Council.

Around 60 people turned up to watch the ribbon-cutting ceremony, as well as taking part in a raffle and visiting the community stalls.

WSCC’s Louise Goldsmith said: “I have been part of a campaign to save the field since 1985, back when the county council were looking to extend their records office.

“The field is a peaceful and tranquil place where children can come to play and people can walk their dogs, and it is really tucked away.

“It was quite emotional on Sunday to finally open it as a green space to the public, it was a lovely day for people to come and have a picnic and celebrate. It was just how it should be.”

Chichester mayor, Cllr Peter Budge, said: “Because the city council has a lease on the field for 25 years, it means there cannot be any housing development on it for that time which is great.

“Hopefully the field will become a nice asset to the city.”
