Mayors maintain the Cinque Ports pomp and ceremony

MAYORS from Rye and Winchelsea were in Hastings on Saturday to take part in the Cinque Ports Speaker’s Day.

A different town from the Cinque Port’s Confederation holds the title of Speakership each year and this year is the turn of Hastings. A colourful ceremony took place on Saturday morning at Winkle Island and the Fishermen’s Museum, with a procession alongside the famous Hastings net huts.

Attending was the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports Admiral The Lord Boyce. The title of Lord Warden was held for many years by the Queen Mother up until her death.

Present in full robes and regalia were Rye Mayor John Breeds and Winchelsea Mayor Mike Melvin.
