Bishopstone May Fair will return to the village on May 2 where visitors will be treated to maypole dancing.

The event will run from 12pm until 4pm and will be raising funds for the Bishopstone Parish Hall,

There will be lots on offer throughout the day including local dance groups performing and maypole dancing.

There will be music from Lewes, Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band, and stalls, games, plant and book sales, food and drink, birds of prey, children’s treasure hunt, classic cars and tea and cake.

A competition will also take place, where people can try and make the best scarecrow, which is open to all ages.

There will be light lunches and afternoon teas being served during the afternoon.

There is free parking at the venue.

Organisers said they would be grateful for any unwanted items for the stalls which can be dropped off at Linda’s Store, Bishopstone Station or contact 01323 492246.

The May Fair will take place at Bishopstone Parish Hall.

The hall was originally built as a village school in 1849.

The school was closed in 1944 and the building was eventually purchased for £600 and passed to a committee of trustees in 1958 to be used as a Village Hall.

A spokeswoman for the committee which runs the hall said the facility depends on regular use, and community volunteers.

She said: “Since 1958 when the building was converted to community use, it has always been funded and managed by community volunteers.

“It is an independent facility, dependent on regular use, the generosity of the local community and the time given by committee members past and present to sustain its place in the life of the parish.

“The hall is regularly used every week by The Bishopstone Table Tennis Group, Jester’s Table Tennis Group, Art Group and a Yoga Group.

“It is an ideal venue for fund raising events from fetes, whist drives, quizzes and popular talks by local historians.”

The hall can be hired out for hourly, morning, afternoon, evening and daily to suit all needs.

To hire or make enquiries about the hall you can contact the booking secretary on 01323 895568.

All proceeds from the fair will go towards the upkeep of The Bishopstone Parish Hall.
