Rye lady Rae Festing was busy hosting yet another charity even on the day it was announced she had been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honors.

For many years Rae has offered up the use of her beautiful garden at 11 High Street, Rye, for local charities to hold events during the summer months.

On Saturday it was the turn of Rye charity ARRCC, which provides activities and respite care for disabled adults.

Irna Mortlock, from ARRCC, said: “We are so pleased for her. How typical of this lovely generous lady to spend her special day, opening her garden to the public to raise funds for a local charity.

“The announcement came through as members, staff and volunteers from ARRCC were setting up their stalls in Rae’s garden.

“Town Crier Rex Swain was on the scene to congratulate her, and a stream of visitors came throughout the day to wish her well.

“This set the scene for a perfect English Summer’s day, a Jazz trio playing in the background, ice chinking in the jugs of Pimm’s, homemade cakes, sausage rolls and teas. Stalls were selling vintage clothing, glassware, bric-a-brac, books, plants and a very grand Tombola!

Andy McConnell, of BBC Antiques Roadshow fame, and also a local businessman, who runs Glass Etc, in Ropewalk, came to support and give his opinion on some glassware that people brought along.

“At the end of a wonderful day, Chief Executive Grace O’Neill thanked Rae for all the years that she has supported ARRCC who offer day and independent living services to disabled, sensory impaired adults and the elderly in Rye and the wider Rother area.”
