The menus at the West Sussex schools, including Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School, in Comptons Lane, were approved by the Children’s Food Trust’s new menu checking service, which is being rolled out across the UK.

The school caters for up to eighty pupils from two to nineteen years, who have severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Their menu is among the first in the country to be approved by new legal requirements, which came into force on Thursday January 1.

These new standards are based on food groups rather than nutritional value allowing school caterers to be more creative, with emphasis on the standards being accessible, easy to apply, as well as being healthy and tasty.

Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for education and skills, said: “It is important to us to ensure that all meals in our schools are served to a high quality and it is great to see that we are achieving this in our special schools.

“A lot of pupils at these schools have complex dietary issues and this accreditation process gives us peace of mind that we are meeting their requirements, while also meeting the new food standards.

“And as part of our focus on meeting the new standards, from January we will only be using seafood which has been caught using sustainable fishing practices. That means as well as improving food quality, we are also improving our ethical sourcing policy.”

Approved menus will display a special logo to show that they comply with the new standards, and will be reviewed twice a year when the menu changes.

All meals at these schools are freshly prepared and cooked by county council staff on site.
