Meeting about the future of Littlehampton Post Office

A PUBLIC meeting is to be held tonight, Thursday, November 14, outlining why the Crown Post Office in Littlehampton should not be ‘downgraded’ to a franchise.

The Communications Workers Union is holding the meeting at Manor House, in Church Street, Littlehampton, from 6pm onwards.

The Post Office has announced it plans to close the Crown branch in The Arcade and re-open a franchised Post Office in the High Street.

Under the plans, the new service will be operated alongside an opticians run by Yogi Eyecare.

Groups have expressed concern that the service of post office available in Littlehampton will inevitably suffer and that business will be adversely affected by the plans.

John Sones, who will be organising the meeting, said: “There are about 100 years of service behind the Post Office that would be lost, which would be a tragedy.

“The effect on businesses in Littlehampton would also be catastrophic. They are all very worried about it. It brings footfall into The Arcade and if it left it would have a terrible impact on businesses based there.”

Mr Sones also questioned what would happen to the post office provision in the town if it failed to be commercially successful for Yogi Eyecare.

He added: “The franchise would be interested in increasing its core business rather than a Crown Post Office, which operates as a public service.

“What happens if it doesn’t perform well?”
