A TROPHY in memory of former parish councillor Doug Sherriff has been awarded to a Sompting woman for her outstanding contribution to the local community.

Mel Shaw, of Hamble Road, was presented with the Doug Sherriff Shield by Mr Sherriff's widow, Margaret, at Sompting Parish Council's annual meeting last Wednesday.

She is also training to become a youth worker at Penhill youth centre in Penhill Road, Lancing.

Over the years, Ms Shaw has worked to close the alleys in her estate because of vandalism and alcohol abuse.

She also instigated Sompting Youth Club and helped to support, create the skatepark and is an active member of Sompting Community Association.

Ms Shaw told the Herald: "I just feel that if the community don't get involved then nothing will change."
