Memory loss roadshow comes to library

The event, which is being organised by East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the Alzheimers Society, is one of a series being held around the county this year.

The roadshow gives advice and information on issues relating to memory loss, support for carers, signs to look for and what to do if you have concerns.

Angela Broomfield, Health Promotion Specialist for Older People, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “Dementia describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function and these conditions are all usually progressive.

“Many people delay seeking help because of low awareness of symptoms and treatments or because they fear they will lose their independence. However, a formal diagnosis is vital for people with dementia so they can access drugs, support and advice to enable them to live well with the condition”.

Early signs of dementia could include:

Struggling to remember recent events but easily recalling things that happened in the past

Struggling to follow conversations or programmes on TV

Forgetting the names of friends or everyday objects

Not able to recall things seen, heard or read

Repeating things or losing the thread of what has been said

Having problems thinking or reasoning

Feeling anxious, depressed or angry about memory loss

Feeling confused, even when in a familiar environment

Other people starting to comment on your memory loss

Anyone who is worried should visit their GP to discuss their concerns. Further investigations may be arranged. There are many reasons for memory loss apart from dementia and the earlier help is sought, the sooner the appropriate treatment and support can be given.
