Men charged with shooting deers with crossbows

Three men have been charged this week accused of firearms and poaching offences.

Glyn Carley, 48, of Standard Hill Close, Ninfield, is charged with taking or killing of deer at night, possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate, possession of a dead mandarin duck and failing to comply with conditions of a firearm certificate by not storing ammunition properly.

Robert Mepham, 49, of Lakedown House, Broad Oak, Heathfield, is charged with four counts of using a crossbow to kill a deer and wild boar, possessing of a dead mandarin duck, and possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate.

Sam Mepham, 21, also of Lakedown House, Broad Oak, Heathfield, is also charged with using a crossbow to kill a deer, possession of a dead mandarin duck, and failing to comply with conditions of a firearm certificate by not storing ammunition properly.

The three were originally arrested in dawn raids just before Christmas.

All three will appear before Hastings magistrates on June 17.

Two other men were arrested on the same day on suspicion of offences under the Deer Act as part of the anti-poaching operation.

A 63-year-old from Brightling and a 74-year-old from Mountfield have both received cautions.
