Women will be keeping their purses under lock and key, spending on average only 10 on that special gift, whilst men attempt to prove themselves to be true romantics at heart, spending around 35.

The BHF is urging those who haven't decided on that special something yet, or weren't planning on celebrating Valentine's this year, to give a gift that saves lives by visiting www.bhf.org.uk/valentine and make 14 February a day to remember for heart patients and their families across the UK.

The BHF Valentine Appeal is aiming to raise 1million to fund BHF Heart Nurses and the charity's Heart Helpline to care for and support more heart patients and their families across the UK. One hour of a BHF Heart Nurse's time costs just 24.
