Met Office issues yellow alert as snow continues to fall

The Met Office has re-issued a yellow alert for snow as snow is currently falling across much of the area, especially along the coast.

In a statement at midday on Tuesday, March 11, a spokesman said: “Although generally light, there are some heavier spells, possibly giving a centimetre or so in places. This snow will continue through the rest of the day but from mid-afternoon (4pm onwards) it looks like more persistent heavier falls are expected to move north across these areas and continue through the evening and much of the night (until 5am).

“Accumulations of 2-5cm of snow are expected in places overnight but there is a low risk of 5-10cm, mainly for southern parts of Sussex. There could also be significant drifting in the strong E-NE wind.

“The Met Office have issued a Yellow SNOW Warning (Low Likelihood of Medium Impacts) to cover this risk. The level 3 cold weather alert remains in force until midnight on Thursday.

“The snow will ease during the early hours of tomorrow morning and it should have cleared all areas by mid-morning.”

It added that a significant snowstorm is expected across the Channel Islands and northern France with the potential of up to 50cm in parts of Normandy, which could have an impact on ferry operations.
