METAL THIEVES TARGET OUTDOOR POOL

SCRAP metal thieves broke into the Pells Swimming Pool in Lewes and ripped out three of the stainless steel ladders that give access to the water.

Several paving slabs were also ripped out and thrown in the pool.

Damage costing more than 1,000 to repair was caused.

Metal thefts have doubled in Sussex during the past year as the price of scrap has soared.

The community association that runs the Pells pool made a profit last year and was planning to make improvements to the pool.

The damage will erode the finances available for that project.

The pool is due to open to the general public for the summer season in May.

Chairman Conrad Ryle said: ''Whoever was involved should know that they are stealing from a charity that is run by volunteers who freely give their time for the benefit of the community.'
