Treasurer Kathryn Davies told the Observer the 48 year old club provided a valuable service teaching children to swim and those who could already swim to improve their skills and gain confidence in the water.

They were taken by bus ten times a term to The Herons Centre at Haslemere where they were taught by qualified instructors.

“To secure the future of the club we really need to get more children on board as we are struggling at the moment.”

She said the non-swimming section was full, but the club was keen to recruit older children who wanted lessons to improve their techniques.

At £6.50 a week for the coach and the swimming lesson, she said it was unbeatable value.

“It’s a great club and so many children have learned to swim through it over the years, many of our committee members were taught as children and their children have now joined.

“We need to put it back on the radar,” said Kathryn.
