Mike’s 100 mile mountain race begins in a Broad Oak gym

Mike Churchyard, 48, from Heathfield, will pound the treadmill at Gover Gym, Broad Oak, tomorrow (Saturday) in a drive to raise funds for Demelza House Children’s Hospice.

It’s also in preparation for taking part in Lakeland 100 Ultra Tour, described as ‘the most spectacular long-distance trail race that has ever taken place in the UK’.

The circular route takes in Lakeland fells and 6,300m of ascent along bridleways and footpaths. Competitors don’t stop or sleep on the route and winners are generally expected to finish close to the 23 hour mark. The overall time for the race, starting at 6pm on July 24, is 40 hours.

Mike said: “Competitors must be experienced ultra distance runners with excellent navigation skills.”
