Milestone for Battle tapestry project

On Saturday, April 30, the 100th stitcher made their mark on the Battle Community Tapestry (BCT).

Archaeologist Philippa Whitehill was presented with a commemorative mug by Tina Greene to mark the occasion.

The BCT was conceived and designed by Tina Greene, artist in residence at the Battle Museum of Local History.

The tapestry is a three-metre long depiction of how the town of Battle might have developed after the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, to the founding of St Mary’s church in 1115.

The design is in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry and the research group of the Battle and District Historical Society has supported the project by advising on the scenes and providing an historically accurate description of each major section.

The project is supported by a grant from Rother District Council’s 1066 Anniversary Scheme, Battle Town Council, Battle and District Historical Society and Battle Museum of Local History.

All members of the public are welcome to try their hand at stitching, with no skill or previous experience necessary.

Sessions take place in The Almonry, High Street, Battle, every Thursday and every other Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

The next Saturday session will be held tomorrow (Saturday, May 14).

A wide range of events are planned as part of Battle 950 – a commemoration of the history of the town, based on the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and instigated by the Battle and District Historical Society and the Battle Museum of Local History.

On Thursday (May 19) the Battle and District Historical Society will be hosting a talk called Battle Before the Battle, to be delivered by Julian Porter.

The talk will take place at Battle Memorial Hall.
