Milestone reached in West Sussex hospital reorganisation

RETENTION of A&E departments at all three West Sussex hospitals is a step nearer following a milestone meeting of the West Sussex Primary Care Trust Board - but the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath is likely to lose its maternity unit.

Six different options have gone forward for further consideration under the Fit for The Future reorganisation of the county's health services, with a final choice due to be made public in July.

Key points which emerged at the meeting were:

* A review of health services in the north of the county will be carried out.

* A new acute hospital at Pease Pottage has been ruled out as unsustainable.

*The feasibility of re-instating A&E services at Crawley Hospital will be looked at during the review.

*The Princess Royal Hospital is likely to lose its maternity services, other than post and ante natal clinics.

*Although A&E departments could be retained at all three hospitals, the services will not be as we know them now.
