Missing Arundel swimmer found safe and well

A SMALL hours swimmer thought missing in the River Arun has been found safe and well.

A police search was sparked after a man was seen diving into the water, wearing a pair of shorts, from the A27 Arundel by-pass bridge at 2.30am today (Friday, August 27) by a motorist, who then saw him swim towards town. The driver, though, noticed that his clothes were still in the same place at 8am, and raised the alarm.

The river bank and nearby areas were checked, and specialist police search officers also used a craft equipped with sonar to check up and down the river itself.

Inspector Kim Hudson said: "We believe that the man had just gone for a swim and could not recall where his clothes were. The family called as a result of media publicity and we are grateful for the media coverage that has been given to this search."

The clothing has been returned to the man, 20, who lives in Arundel.
