'MISSING LINK' TRAINS BY 2012

THE Lewes to Uckfield railway line could be re-opened, at least in part, by 2012, according to the Wealden Line Campaign pressure group.

The benefits of regenerating the line are explained in a feasibility study published by a consortium made up of Bride Parks Merlin, Intermodality and Norwest Holst.

Bride Parks is a development company with experience in railway design, construction, financing and operation.

Norwest is a civil engineering company, specialising in railways.

Intermodality is a Sussex-based transport consultancy.

The report says there are far-reaching advantages in reviving the disused seven miles between Lewes and Uckfield as part of a new rail corridor between London and the Sussex coast.

A spokesman for the Wealden Line Campaign said: 'We believe the sustained clamour to have the route re-opened cannot be ignored any longer.

'It has already been too long in the offing and risks verging on a political farce, given the prevarication and dithering of the past couple of decades.'
