"We're sad about Derek," said Anne Webb, who became friends with Norcross, 76, after the 1996 Olympics and hosted him on subsequent visits to the city.

"He had such enthusiasm for people. He loved the town of Norcross and its history and we were enriched by his friendship."

City officials plan a tribute to Norcross but haven't decided yet what it will be, Webb said.

The retired educator and local politician visited the city that shared his name a number of times over the years, Webb said.

He attended the dedication of Norcross High School in 2001, she said, and the city's "Crowns and Regalia" Festival in 2003.

He made the acquaintance of other people named Norcross in the area.

He received the Order of the British Empire from Prince Charles in 2005, she said.
