Montague Street’s £1 million revamp faces delays

WORK on the £1 million revamp of Worthing’s busiest shopping street could face delays after calls to retain the street’s traditional features.

A public consultation on designs for Montague Street saw 70 per cent of traders of residents vote in favour of grey paving over dark coloured slabs.

But a recommendation from Worthing Borough Council’s planning committee suggested retaining the traditional red brick paving in some form.

An emergency meeting has now been called between all parties to discuss the way forward and reach a consensus.

Town centre manager Sharon Clarke said: “I’m disappointed because of the potential delays and we have got such a short window of time where work is not going to cause disruption for traders.

“We felt the one major issue of red brick paving needed to be discussed in more detail to make sure we’re not doing something inappropriate for the town centre.”
