More information on this year's Christmas lights in Bexhill as well as plans for other events were discussed at a public meeting last night (Monday, May 23).

The group responsible for the festive decorations Shining Lights held the consultation at Bexhill Rowing Social Club to get residents’ and traders’ views to make 2016 even better than last year.

A children’s event to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings at Egerton Park was talked about as well as plans for a pyromusical fireworks display on bonfire night.

Suggestions on how to improve the late-night shopping and Christmas lights switch-on were also discussed and co-director Andrew Crotty was pleased with how the meeting went.

“It went really well, we had a few people turn up, mostly traders which was great for us,” he said.

“He discussed future plans and got some feedback from last year’s event which people were very good about.

“One guy with a business on Western Road who had been there for six years said that night [the Christmas lights switch-on] was the best they had ever had business-wise.”

Shining Lights were given full responsibility for the festive decorations by Rother District Council last month and have taken the mantle in various other events including the Queen’s birthday beacon-lighting and firework display on Galley Hill.

Andrew said the group wanted to do something to commemorate 1066 around October 14, and thought a kids party at the park would be a good idea.

The Royal Mint has agreed to provide a prize for the best shield design, which Andrew thought could be one of the special 50p coins, plus Sussex Falconry will have birds used in the 11th century on display.

Shining Lights is planning on organising the bonfire night celebrations with a pyromusical fireworks display on Galley Hill due to be the main event, which is where fireworks are let off to music.

Andrew said they hoped to put on a pumpkin event for Halloween in Devonshire Square on October 29, but that is yet to be confirmed.

For the Christmas lights, one of the traders suggested putting the decorations up at the start of November to get people into the spirit, as well as having maps of some kind on each road telling people what each shop is doing for late-night shopping on December 2.
