More bike marking events to take place in Worthing following successful campaign in January

Bike marking events will continue across Worthing throughout April following successful events during January.

The Operation Velo initiative was launched in West Sussex in an attempt to reduce the number of bicycles stolen in the area.

The scheme uses a new way of marking and registering bikes, and Sussex Police has been hosting free events at locations where officers have been marking, registering and offering advice about the best way to secure cycles.

PC Tim Jose, who works on the initiative, said: “Our marking events are going from strength to strength with bike marking events already showing significant results across the areas where the initiative has been run.

“Bike thefts across Adur and Worthing, Arun and Chichester are, on average, down by over 38 per cent, with over 1,300 bikes marked across the areas.

“Each bicycle is marked using an anti-tamper label and the owner’s details are registered on a national database, much like that which is used for cars and motorbikes. Officers will be able to check if a bicycle is stolen or in the wrong hands within minutes of stopping the rider.”

He added: “Cyclists will be able to come along to the events and speak to the team about registering their bicycle and to get advice about different types of locks.”

The events are taking place on the following dates:

Friday, April 19- Findon valley shops between 3.30 and 6pm.
