In November 2014, Marchfield were granted final planning permission for a large development on land north of Barnhorn Road.

The development included 275 homes, office space, a nursing home containing up to 60 beds, a doctor’s surgery for up to 10 GPs and a one form entry primary school.

But the developers say discussions with East Sussex County Council’s education department showed there was “no longer a requirement” for the proposed school.

Now they have submitted a new planning application for an additional 67 homes in place of the school.

In a letter to Rother District Council, the applicant said: “The proposed development will bring significant benefits to the local community, including providing additional much-needed homes for a range of households on a range of incomes.

“The site’s ability to ensure a continuous and adequate supply of housing will also help to bring stability to the local housing market and improve the affordability of housing in Bexhill and across the district more widely.”

Campaigners were vocal in their opposition to the initial development, including Cllr Stuart Earl who branded it ‘corporate vandalism for commercial greed’ and warned the impact would be “catastrophic”.

Rother District Council’s planning committee will make a decision on the new application at a later date.
