Rother District Council’s cabinet decided to ring-fence a third of the £9,000 budget, previously only available for new events, for existing events on Monday (December 5).

The council said the new provision should help the organisers to continue to grow towards being self-sufficient as applicants must prove how they are doing so.

Bexhill Motofest organiser Howard Martin said: “This is fantastic news for events in Bexhill. It means that events like Bexhill Motofest and Roaring 20s can at least cover some of their essential costs like first aid and stewarding.

“We are also looking forwards to working with Cllr Sally-Ann Hart on forming an events group of all the key events organisers in the town, so that we can all work together and set the highest possible standards of professionalism for events in Bexhill.

“This shows that Rother now have a real commitment to events in the area and recognise how important they are to the local economy and the regeneration of the town.”

Mr Martin had called on Rother to provide more funding for established events as his and others were at risk of folding because of a lack of investment.

The council’s £9,000 pot was available to events for the first three years before ending, but now organisers can apply for more funding until they can stand on their own two feet.

If the £3,000 is not needed, it will go back to supporting new events.

A Rother District Council spokesman said: “Cabinet felt this was a pragmatic and sensible way of supporting existing tourism events while maintaining the original aim of the scheme in helping ventures to launch and become established.”
