Horsham District Council, which runs the theatre in North Street, has purchased a new digital projector for the 420 seat theatre which means it can now be used more frequently to show films.

At certain times of the year The Capitol could also play a choice of three or even four titles in one week, to supplement the increased theatre and live performance programme both in the theatre and studio spaces at The Capitol.

The Capitol already has two dedicated cinema screens.

It will also increase the audience capacity for the live content, e.g. National Theatre and the MET Opera seasons, which have both proved extremely popular.

Jonathan Chowen (Con, Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead), cabinet member for arts, heritage and leisure, said:

“This is great news for The Capitol.

”This new projector extends the viewing ability, meaning three new films can now be screened in three different spaces, giving visitors a greater choice of what they can watch.”

Nick Mowat, general manager at The Capitol, added: “The new projector is already being put to good use and we were recently able to put on extra showings of the popular movie Monsters University to cope with the demand during the summer holidays.”

The new digital projector has also been purchased to keep up with modern demands as many of the film distribution companies have indicated that they will cease production of 35mm film in the near future

Films showing at The Capitol this week include Red 2, The Wolverine and The Smurfs 2.
