More support for Chichester's 20mph campaign

A Chichester group which wants to improve safety for all road users across the city has received the backing of one of the region's European MPs.

The 20 Is Plenty group, led by Chichester mother Sarah Sharp, is campaigning for a blanket 20mph speed limit on residential roads across the city.

In December, the group made a presentation to Chichester City Council which agreed to support the Total 20 campaign, and asked for the proposals to be considered in more detail.

Last week, the Green MEP for Sussex and the South East, Keith Taylor, who is also responsible for road safety in the European Parliament, visited Chichester to back the scheme.

While in the city, Mr Taylor met Mrs Sharp and also Anita van Rossum and Matt Damper who are members of environmental group Transition Chichester.

After meeting with them, Mr Taylor said he would be writing to the county council urging it to build on the work which has already been done in Chichester and Worthing to introduce 20mph areas.

Mr Taylor said: “Introducing 20mph can make a real difference to a city like Chichester.

“The facts are clear, a pedestrian hit by a car travelling at 20mph is likely to suffer slight injuries, but at 30mph they are likely to be severely hurt.

“At 40mph or above they are likely to be killed.

“Having met with campaigners in Chichester I’m going to write to WSCC to ask them to introduce this policy which would help improve the safety and wellbeing of Chichester residents.”

People will be able to find out more about the campaign when 20’s Plenty Chichester hold a public meeting at the Assembly Rooms on Wednesday, March 16.

The meeting will start at 7.45pm.

The title of the presentation will be called Safer Streets for Chichester from Vision to Reality.
