More talks about new sign needed

FURTHER talks with Tesco have been demanded about a sign at the company's new North Bersted store.

Councillors said they wanted the retailer to move the gantry sign for the Tesco Express from its current position.

Neighbour Alison Fergie told Arun District Council’s development control committee the illuminated sign shone into her house throughout the night.

“It would be better sited closer to the car park, rather than outside my property pointing into my home,” she said.

Cllr Ricky Bower (Con, East Preston) said: “I would not want to live in that property having that sign outside. We ought to seek a relocation of the sign from Tesco.

“We should defer a decision on this planning application to carry out that negotiation.”

The externally-lit gantry sign was included in one of a series of planning applications for relatively-minor aspects of Tesco’s conversion of the former Rising Sun pub on Chichester Road. Five other non-illuminated signs – three for the car park and two for the store entrance – were also included in the application.
