“We’re very pleased with the grant and the support for our group,” she said.

The group will put the money towards their exercise classes using tai chi and music to get the group moving.

Another happy recipient was Rye Community Primary School & Pugwash Nursery.

Head teacher Jane Howard said: “We’re just thrilled to receive that amount of money from a local charity because it’s so important that local children receive the benefits too.”

She said the grant will go towards a shaded area in the playground and other equipment for the children.

Other charities chosen were Acting Up in Rye, which was given £600, Camera 1066 Club which received £500, Little Gate Farm (£500), £700 was given to Rye Children’s Centre and Rye Community Garden got £1,000.

The shop was jointly owned by the group and Activities, Respite, Rehabilitation, Care Centres (ARRCC) until September when they amicably split.

Rye MP Amber was enlisted to hand out the cheques.

“I was so impressed to find out just how much money the Rye Community Charity Shop with ARRCC has generated since April 2013 when it has been trading as a joint initiative for the benefit of local small community groups and charities including ARRCC,” she said.

“Following the creation of the charity shop to enable local people to buy affordable clothes and goods, relying entirely upon donations and the goodwill of the public, £5,970 was given out previously, prior to the current funding round of £5,200.”

Amber Rudd said she was amazed by the £40,000 net profit jointly raised by ARRCC and the charity shop.

More than £11,000 has been given to community groups before the shop closed in September.

She said she was delighted to hear the shop will re-open in the new year once suitable premises have been found.
