More Than Village Show

YAPTON S annual flower show on Saturday was much more than a village event with some exhibitors travelling hundreds of miles to take part.

The Sussex branch of the British Gladiolus Society teamed up with the organisers, Yapton Cottage Gardeners Society, to give visitors two shows for the price of one, writes Roger Green.

Among the gladiolus growers were enthusiasts from as far away as Sheffield, Plymouth and Macclesfield, Cheshire, taking part in their society s regional show.

And the presence of the specialists helped to light up the show marquee, on the village green, with hundreds of flower spikes in a huge range of colours.

The village event attracted 560 entries from 76 exhibitors, the numbers reflecting difficult growing seasons for flowers, although vegetable classes were well supported, with exc-ellent potatoes and runner beans.

Crossbush farmer Malcolm Paradine was once more the most successful competitor in the vegetable classes.

There were excellent entries in the floral art and cookery sections, with wine and beer classes drawing their regular supporters.
