More Time For Stabbing

TWO women who carried out an horrific stabbing attack on a 13-year-old Littlehampton schoolboy have had their prison sentences increased by the Appeal Court.

Judges agreed yesterday that the original Lewes Crown Court sentences on Lorraine Large and Gemma McGarvie were "unduly lenient", following an appeal by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Large's nine-year term has been increased to 11 years and McGarvie must serve a further 18 months on top of her original seven years.

Both were convicted of attempted murder following a trial in December.

Large, 22, of Foxes Croft, Barnham, and McGarvie, of South Terrace, Littlehampton, stabbed the boy more than 20 times and then left him for dead on The Green, opposite McGarvie's flat in December, 2000.

Sally Cole, CPS senior reviewing lawyer, said: "The CPS and Sussex Police believed the original sentences were too lenient for the trauma and pain suffered by the boy and his family.

"Today the court has endorsed that belief.

"Throughout, we wanted only to seek justice for the victim and his family. The increase in their sentences now better reflects the seriousness of the attack."
