THERE will be a new chance to join Lewes' network of flood wardens when a training exercise is held at Lewes Town Hall on October 29, 6.30pm.

The network began in the summer of last year following the devastating floods in Lewes in October 2000. About 40 flood wardens have volunteered so far. Full coverage would need around 70 of them.

Flood wardens will act as the focus of community self-help in any future flood emergency.

In particular, volunteers are needed from areas of Lewes that were hit by the floods.

Those interested should contact Paul Rideout of the South Downs Council for Voluntary Service on 01273 483832.

Flood wardens can encourage people to be well prepared for emergencies, identify vulnerable people in the local community who may need special help in an emergency, create local stores for sandbags, pass on flood warnings, and support the authorities in an emergency.
