Morrisons bid to expand Worthing store

JUST weeks after the opening of Tesco's giant new supermarket at West Durrington, rival Morrison has announced plans to extend its store near Worthing railway station.

Peak-time congestion, resulting in "conflict between trolleys", is one reason Morrison gives for its expansion scheme.

Morrison is seeking Worthing Council's go-ahead to enlarge its Newland Street store by 1,269sq.m to a total area of 6,305sq.m - to include a contemporary-style caf on the southern flank.

But even with its extended shop floor, on the eastern flank, the Morrison store would still be about 50 per cent smaller than the Tesco Extra outlet at West Durrington.

Forty-eight car parking slots would be lost in Morrison's new development - down from 344 spaces to 296. But disabled-badge spaces would increase from 20 to 22, with 20 cycle spaces.

An agent's design statement to the council says the present store is congested at peak times. "There is insufficient space on the shop floor to display a full range of fresh food, and a reasonable range of non-food goods increasingly expected by customers within superstores."

The statement continues: "There is no break within the length of the aisles, thus resulting in conflicts between trolleys."

It says the proposal would not have a detrimental effect on the vitality of existing centres, and "the scheme will contribute to the health of the town centre".
