Morrisons' expansion plans welcomed in Bognor

Town councillors have welcomed proposals to double the size of Morrisons in Bognor Regis.

The planning and licensing committee members said the planned redevelopment of the Bedford Street store was good news for the town.

A statement by committee chairman Stephen Kerrigan said: "The committee welcomed the confidence shown by Morrisons in rebuilding this modern superstore within Bognor town centre and supporting the local economy.

"It is hoped this will encourage other large companies to open in the town's shopping area."

But the councillors urged Morrisons to consider adding petrol sales to the new-look premises because of the absence of fuel outlets in the town centre.

The multi-million pound plans by Morrisons will see the existing store replaced by an outlet twice the size on stilts above a car park.

It will stretch from the High Street back to the current Fitzleet multi-storey car park.

The proposals are being considered by Arun District Council before its members decide if they should go ahead.
