Mother-of-four Karen Hale, 56, of Sompting Road, Broadwater, first fell ill with Lupus when she was five months pregnant with her youngest daughter 19 years ago.

Lupus UK describes the condition as a chronic and presently-incurable illness of the immune system, a condition in which the body’s defence mechanism begins to attack itself through an excess of antibodies in the blood stream causing inflammation and damage in the joints, muscles and other organs.

Karen said: “For much of the time a sufferer can look entirely normal. Underneath, it is a very different story – one of pain, frustration, desperation and depression.”
