Mother’s ‘heart is breaking’ after Marc Martin dies in Handcross crash

A mother has paid tribute to her ‘amazing’ son, a father of two young children, who died after a car crashed into a tree in Handcross.

Friends Marc Martin, 22, from Haywards Heath and Matt Preece, 21, from Lindfield were sitting in the back of a BMW which hit a tree at High Beeches Lane on Wednesday (December 17).

They died later that night in hospital from injuries suffered in the crash.

Marc’s mum Marie Smith told the Middy: “My son was an amazing son and father to his two sons.

“He will be missed every minute of every day, he was very much loved by me and his brother and sister, and had lots of friends, one of whom died with him.”

Marc had two children, Taylor, who is five, and James, who is nine months old.

Marie added: “My heart is breaking, my amazing son has gone, god rest his soul.”

The car flipped after hitting the tree at 10pm. The driver, a 20-year-old man from Lindfield, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

A front seat passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Haywards Heath, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital before being released.

Police are appealing to witnesses of the crash. Anyone who saw anything is asked to email [email protected] or ring 101 quoting Operation Ashwick.
