Mothers rate birth experience at Worthing Hospital

Mothers who have given birth at Worthing Hospital have rated their experiences.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has received responses from 211 women who have given birth at Worthing and St Richard’s hospitals, which are run by Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Tracey Mudd, Head of Midwifery at Western Sussex Hospitals said: “We’re particularly pleased with these results as we embarked on a wide-ranging programme to improve the experience of families last year. We have gone to great lengths to work with women and their families to better understand how we can improve their experience when they come into hospital to have their babies.

“Based on patient feedback, we set up a triage phone line so that women in labour can contact the labour ward first time, every time.

“That phone line is staffed by a dedicated midwife, so there is always someone there to answer the phone and provide the information and reassurance our patients need.”

The trust has also set up groups on social media to help the hospital communicate better with pregnant women.

The trust scored better than the national average on two particular questions – being able to move around during labour and the length of time partners can stay with new mums and their babies after birth.

Emma Jayes had her first baby, Felix, in St Richard’s Hospital two years ago and gave birth to Henrietta there at Christmas 2014.

She said: “My pregnancy and birth with my daughter was a completely different experience to the one I had first time around. I felt empowered and taken seriously.”
