Motoring marvel helps Burpham day go supersonic

More than 1,000 people attended the Burpham Motor Racing Club’s (BMRC) summer show, Auto Historica – which this year featured the stunning Bloodhound supersonic car, a jet-powered vehicle capable of 1,000 miles per hour.

BMRC’s show director Dominic Santana said: “This was by far our best event yet.

“I didn’t expect this number of people to turn up. We were really over-subscribed for cars coming and it was quite a challenge to get them all to park up and in the space.

“But we couldn’t have asked for a better day. It was absolutely fantastic.”

Bloodhound will be used in an attempt to break the current land speed record, in 2015.

The mechanical marvel’s project director, and former land speed record holder, Richard Noble was on hand to chat to motor enthusiasts about the ups and downs of creating a supersonic vehicle. He also signed autographs during the event.

Other attractions on the day included about 70 Aston Martins, from the 1921 model of the A3 – provided by the Aston Martin Heritage Trust – to the Vanquish, a model which featured in the James Bond thriller Die Another Day.

There was also a life-size replica Spitfire fighter plane and a rocket car challenge for children, with all the winners getting their names inscribed on the tail fin of the Bloodhound.

The day raised more than £1,000 for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.
