Motorist three times over limit

A MOTORIST who told police they were “wasting their time” breathalysing him turned out to be three times over the limit.

Financial advisor Dennis Wigg, 68, was stopped by police close to his Pett level home at 11.15pm on February 20 after they spotted him leaving the Smugglers pub.

Wigg, of Marsham Brook Lane, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he appeared at Hastings Magistrates Court last week.

Mark Kateley, prosecuting, said: “Police saw him getting into his car and he appeared to them to be inebriated.

“They attempted to stop his vehicle and it eventually pulled over. He was not very happy about having to take a breath test and told police they were wasting their time.

“In fact he gave a reading of 107mg of alcohol, the legal limit being 35mg. He has no previous convictions.

Ros Crooks, defending, said: “He is 68 and of previous good character. This was totally out of character for him.

“He is a financial advisor and has suffered recently due to the current financial climate.

“He and his partner had to sell their property and now live in rented accommodation. He is a family man.”

Magistrates fined Wigg £200 and ordered him to pay £85 costs as well as banning him from driving for 23 months.
