Motorist was ‘too drunk’ to remember crash

A MOTORIST who was so drunk she could not remember crashing her car, has been told she must stay off the road for two years.

Victoria Champion, 22, of High Street, Ninfield, was driving her Ford Fiesta in Holliers Hill, Bexhill, in the early hours of March 19 when she crashed the vehicle into a parked Vauxhall.

Police were called to the scene, and found Champion walking in a nearby road ‘clearly in an intoxicated state’, Hastings Magistrates Court heard.

Mark Kateley, prosecuting, said: “She confirmed it was her vehicle in the road, but said she did not know how it got there.

“She confirmed to police she was driving it, but could not remember much about it or remember the crash.”

Tests revealed Champion had 90mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is just 35mcg.

Champion pleaded guilty to one charge of drink driving at a court hearing last Friday.

Ros Crook, defending, said: “She is extremely sorry for the way she behaved that evening and is extremely ashamed.”

Ms Crook told the court that Champion had no previous convictions and was due to start a university course.

She added that Champion, who previously worked as a carer and was a delivery driver for Dominos Pizza before the crash, hoped to become a teacher.

Magistrates banned Champion from driving for 24 months and ordered her to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12 month community order.

She must also pay £50 court costs.
