Motorists in Polegate and Willingdon are facing delays for several weeks because of resurfacing work on the A22.

Golden Jubilee, part of the A22 between Willingdon Drove and Dittons Road, between Polegate and Stone Cross, is undergoing a major resurfacing programme which could last until mid-June.

East Sussex County Council’s highways department said it had closed the road to protect workmen. The council said it would re-open the northbound stretch from 7am Saturday to 8am Tuesday for bank holiday.

Head of highways Roger Williams said: “We were required to close Golden Jubilee Way to ensure the safety of our workforce on this high-speed road. Closing the road also allows us to work quickly and minimise the pain for road users. We have made very good progress already and are ahead of schedule at this stage. Signs have been in place giving motorists the chance to find alternative routes and while we appreciate the work will cause disruption, we’d ask people to bear with us as the result will be a smoother, safer road.”
