MOUNTFIELD HISTORY YOU CAN VISIT: A final reminder of Peter's talk tonight (March 31st) at 7.30 in Mountfield Village Hall: 'Mountfield's Tudor Ironworks '“ a typical Wealden furnace and forge'. Entry is a suggested donation of £3.00 per person (or free if you are either very mean or a member of DACS). This really is history right on our doorstep with much still to be seen '” if you know what you are looking for. Again, all those attending the talk will be invited to join simple guided tours of the site over a couple of subsequent weekends: Sundays 2nd and 9th April in the morning. A pleasant stroll through lovely countryside that should have some flowers such as the kingcups and maybe the rarer and weird toothwort doing spectacular or weird things as well. We hope to see you there.

I KNOW A BANK: From our gardening correspondent, Chris Holden: The keen eyed of you who are passing the hall may notice that we have made significant progress with the wild flowers growing in the grounds. The primroses and wood anemones are looking wonderful, but that’s only the start. As of this week I am proud to report that we have cowslips growing on the bank and signs of a multitude of ox-eye daisies. We’re very lucky to be in receipt of quiet and constant help from a local enthusiast to whom I send many thanks. The hanging baskets and pots will be back this year and the water butts installed last spring make it much easier to keep all the plants going, so another thank you is sent to all the hall users who give them a regular top up.

WATERWORKS: We are just back from two weeks away so we haven’t had a chance to unravel why South East Water, who were going to start at the old pub and work south seem to have started at the south and be working north towards the old pub. Watch this space. And the Parish Council and Rother are on the case with the Southern Water issue. Peter and Jim have a liaison meeting with MG and SW on Friday and will report back next week.

CLUB SNOOKER: What a great couple of weeks it has been for Mountfield Club’s snooker team. They clinched the Division 2 league title with a 4–1 home win over Cramp. The following week, they completed a remarkable league and cup double when the beat Hawkhurst A 3–1 in the final. The match was played at Battle and Hawkhurst, who were the holders, took the first frame. Kevin Gray won the second frame to level the match. Up stepped captain Steve Smith who won the next frame to give Mountfield a 2–1 lead, and Colin Elmes kept his nerve to win the fourth and final frame for a handsome 3–1 win.

OTHER CLUB NEWS: Next Monday, April 3rd, is the Club’s AGM starting for about 8.00 pm where all members are welcome and will be given the chance for their say. On Saturday April 15th, the club will be hosting an Easter Quiz with a Buffet and Easter Egg Raffle. There will be a £2.00 entry fee per person with no more than six per team. To book your place please text or contact Steve Smith on 07720 298971.

BIRDS NOT OF A FEATHER: Jackie Spriggs writes: “The pond in Mountfield has long been an attraction for ducks and geese various. Of late, though, regular visitors will have noticed just three white geese and a mallard duck [Editor’s note: The name’s Frank, Frank Drake] which has formed a particular attachment to one particular goose: they glide around together and then waddle out into the field for their grass. However, over this last week they have been joined by A N Other bird of seemingly rare distinction: tall, slim and grey and white [sounds like Robin Harris. Ed]. He or she has been trying to integrate with the other four who at the moment are not welcoming. The genus of this bird has been a bit of a puzzle but we now have a positive identification: an Indian Runner Duck. How it arrived is also a mystery? Did it arrive by air escaped from a breeder, or was it put there?” [Good luck to Jackie who is due a minor pit stop in hospital for a very minor, outpatient op — her head, I think — any second. Also, how did the duck get there? Jackie, the answer is in the name: it jogged — from Mumbai.]
