Mountfield

SW CONSTRUCTION: The work in Church Road has now been completed so we should start by thanking British Gypsum, on behalf of all of us who live along Kent Lane, for making our lives so much less awkward '” and less expensive '” than they would have been without their offer of the back route. Paul Last negotiated this on our behalf. Thanks, mate.

On behalf of the Parish Council, I tried to make sure that all the businesses along the lane, from steel fabricators to livery stables, were aware and could make whatever arrangements were necessary to keep things moving but there was one thing that I hadn’t thought about: the grape harvest!

The road closure has now moved to Hoath Hill so we should repeat the request in SW’s letter to the residents to only park on the east side of the road on Wednesdays to allow collection of rubbish and recycling.

Finally, the works have moved into the children’s playground which is still freely accessible although the entrance from the Twitten is no via a temporary gate in the NE corner. The working area has been safely fenced off with inked Heras fencing. There is a slight loss of play area but Glen, the site engineer, hopes they will be out of the playground in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, there are some life-sized Tonka toys to watch.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: The service on Remembrance Sunday (November 13th) at All Saints Mountfield will commence at 10.50 am in readiness for the observance of the Silence at 11.00 am. Rev’d Ann-Marie will be officiating at Mountfield this year. (Note that Brightling and Netherfield will be holding their own simultaneous services.)

HARVEST FESTIVAL: As reported last week, following the completion of the major works to the church roof, there will be a very belated Harvest Festival on November 20th at 10.00 am. As this is the week before Advent Sunday, when the church is traditionally stripped of floral decoration until Christmas, we are only doing minimal florals but hope that people attending will bring tinned or packeted goods as all donations will go as usual to the St Nicholas Fellowship in St Leonards-on-Sea for the young people in their care.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: On Friday November 18th, Jodie and Elliott are hosting a charity Auction of Promises Charity Night with all proceeds going to Children in Need. This should easily tip the Club over the £1,000 mark for money raised for charity this year.

MOUNTFIELD VILLAGE HALL BIG SCREEN SOCIAL NIGHTS: As the dark evenings of the autumn come round again, the new season of social nights kicks off with the showing of Eddie the Eagle on Friday November 25th with refreshments and plenty of time for socialising. Doors open at 7.30 pm and there is a suggested donation of £5.00 per person towards the upkeep of the hall. Everyone is welcome so go along and chuckle at this hilarious movie based on the true story of Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards when he made his ski jumping challenge at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. “Delightfully feel-good,” Empire.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY: This year’s party will take place on Saturday December 10th in the Village Hall from 4.00 till 6.00 and will be run by DNA Kids who are THE kids party specialists. Oh, and there will be a special visitor at the end of the party… The event is open to all Mountfield children of primary school age or under. As ever, the grandchildren of anyone living in the parish are welcome in return for a small contribution. Please can they email [email protected] or ring 01580 882147 to book places for an event that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

SHORES GARAGE: We have heard from Paul Questier who is researching Canadia Road where he and Eileen live “in what was the Canadia Tea Rooms”. He asks if anyone can “throw any light on the location of Shores garage which consisted of some petrol pumps on the London Road. They were run by a Walter Lovell Shore who I have found lived at Watts Bridge, Canadia. I am wondering whether Watts Bridge is the bridge over the River Line by the sewage pumping station just north of Canadia Road as this is the only bridge that I am aware of on the London Road. This would place the garage at what is now Brooklands.” In his email, Paul added that Walter Shore’s son, John Talbot Lovell Shore, is well worth googling. He most certainly is — what an extraordinary life. If you have any info, do let us know and we’ll pass it on.

FINALLY: Following the closure of Church Road, many of us discovered just how long the British Gypsum train is. Indeed Mark Hardy, who was detailed to supervise the crossing, informs us that it is “nearly a quarter of a mile long”. Seemed longer.
