Mountfield

NEXT SOCIAL EVENING: A reminder that tomorrow (Saturday May 7th) is the next of the Mountfield Village Big Screen Social Nights with the screening of another hit film. Doors open at 7.30 pm. The suggested donation for the complimentary film and refreshments is £5.00 per person. The Club bar will be open from 7.00 pm. Meet up before the film, get front row seats where you can put your feet up. All welcome. If you're not already on the mailing list for details of future films, go to the village hall website at www.mountfieldvillagehall.org.uk where you can use the red envelope button to add your e-mail address and get a regular film update. A tour de force by Maggie Smith is always something special.

OPEN GARDENS: This Sunday, May 8th, the gardens at Mountfield Court will be open for charity under the National Gardens Scheme from 2.00 to 5.00 pm. If you have not visited, it offers a 3-acre wild woodland garden; bluebell-lined walkways through an exceptional collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, and other flowering shrubs; fine trees — including a magnificent Handkerchief Tree (Davidea involucrata) — and outstanding views. New since last year is a beautiful paved herb garden. The gardens and grounds surround the fine 1715 house (not open). Admission £4, children free. Home-made teas.

HAPPY CLUB: The Mountfield “Happy Club” for visually impaired people is part of Hastings Voluntary Association for the Blind and would like to welcome any new members. Drop in for a visit on Thursdays to see what we do; just sit and chat, try your hand at weaving with cane, knitting is a favourite too, or you can also have a go at playing the ukulele. We meet at 10.00 am. and Club ends at 2.30 pm. Enjoy a two course lunch, a raffle and a quiz. We have outings and occasional entertainment. Most importantly, transport can be arranged if needed. For any further information please ring Margarett Smith on 01424 77 4158. It was the members themselves, many years ago, who christened it the Happy Club — with reason.

PARISH COUNCIL: Next Tuesday, May 10th, is the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council. This is the meeting at which members elect the chairman and vice chairman, and nominate which members will represent the Council on various outside bodies. Other items on the agenda include the latest schedule for Southern Water’s construction works, the major new planning application submitted by the owners of Baldwins Farm to replace the previous application which proved so controversial with local people, and various recent or ongoing planning enforcement issues. Everybody is welcome for all or part of the meeting.

WAYNE HARDY: In case anyone has missed the announcements, Wayne’s funeral will be held on Friday 13th May at Salehurst Church at 2.00. This will be followed by a private cremation for family members only who will then return to join his many friends, wider family and neighbours at Mountfield Club and Village Hall afterwards. His mum, Peggy, has requested bright cheerful dress in celebration of Wayne’s life.

THROUGH TREES & TIME: Peter writes: The first two of these sell-out walks took place over the last two Sundays with the proceeds going towards the upkeep of All Saints Church, Mountfield. I am pleased to report that both walks were hugely successful and have raised well over £200 so far for a very special building. That should help towards the latest damage by the jackdaws.

FUNNY OLD SPRING: It’s been a spring of very warm weather followed by very chilly weather and it’s had a curious effect on plants. The earlier plants that caught the warm spell were early such as the bluebells which are going to be over slightly earlier than usual and the wild garlic which is flowering several weeks earlier, whereas the later plants caught the colder snap with the cow parsley only half its normal height at best. But, in all these things, where Mountfield leads, other villages can only play catch up.

TICK ALERT: And, as we type this ready to file the Village Voice (Monday evening), we’ve broken off to take tick number 100 off one of our dogs. We used to comfort ourselves that we weren’t in Lyme Disease territory but then one of the Wyatt children at The Banks contracted the disease a few years ago. Do be careful.

CONTACT: As ever, if you have anything for the Village Voice, we can be contacted on 880614 or via [email protected]. We always welcome contributions and feedback, even from the suburbs.
