ST MICHAEL’S HOSPICE: We are all aware of the dreadful fire at the hospice. It was therefore all the more frustrating that our email package decided throw Jon Cole’s original email into a junk folder. Jon, who lives at Harestone (next to the Old Bakery), had written to say that he would be taking part in the 100 mile Prudential RideLondon-Surrey cycling challenge on August 2nd and that he would be riding in aid of St Michael’s.

The gruelling course took in the complete Olympic Road Race route from the 2012 Olympics through Surrey countryside, including the climbs of Box Hill and Leith Hill, as well as the streets of London. Jon completed the course in six and a half hours. It’s not too late to support him in his efforts for St Michael’s: you can visit his page at www.JustGiving.com/JonCole6, or email him at [email protected] or simply call him on 07702 579745.

For information about the impact of the fire on the work of St Michael’s, put the words: “community st michael’s fire” into Google for a recent Battle Observer report.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: We start with a reminder that tomorrow evening (Saturday August 15th), the Mountfield Club are hosting a live band, Pretty Loose, playing hits from years gone by — the 60s, 70s plus some blues. (A little bird tells us that one member of the band is a Mountfieldian!) Weather permitting (looking good as we type) there will be a BBQ. There will also be a raffle so, in addition to having fun, supporting the Club, there will also be the opportunity to raise much needed money for St Michael’s. Entry is FREE and all are welcome, young and old, members and non-members, fully licensed bar. The fun kicks off at 7.00 pm

And a new date for the diary. On Saturday September 12th, the Club is running a car treasure hunt with starting times between 5.00 and 6.00 pm. Again, weather permitting, there will be a BBQ for those who make it back to base. Entry is just £5.00 per car. This was a great success last year. To enter, just give Glenn a call on 07917 752576.

REMINDERS: Just a reminder for all walkers and riders about the Ride/Walk that reaches the parts of the local Weald that others can’t. The date is Saturday September 19th with setting out any time between 9.30 and 12.30. The full distance is approximately 10 miles but there are opportunities to shorten the route according to fitness levels. Entry forms, prices, etc are available from your Village Voices.

FINALLY: Following the changes to the roadside recycling collections where all bottles, regardless of colour, are put into the same box, we noticed the other day that the bottle bins in the car park at Robertsbridge Station now have new notices on them. They used to be labelled GREEN GLASS, CLEAR GLASS, etc. They now warn MIXED GLASS ONLY. So if you only have a couple of green bottles…
