Mountfield

CHILDREN’S PARTY: We don’t expect anyone needs reminding that the Mountfield Children’s Christmas Tree Party is tomorrow, in the Village Hall, from 4.00 to 6.00 in the afternoon. But here is some other news leading on from that…

KIDZ: The Christmas Tree Party is organised by the Mountfield Children’s Club, under the umbrella of the Village Hall Committee. The Children’s Club are looking to re-brand and re-launch with the aim of building on the existing activities of the party and the annual bonfire. They would like to develop and provide more opportunities for the children (and families) in Mountfield to come together. At the end of the party, since most parents in the village will be there, Caroline Hollamby will take a few minutes to explain these ideas a bit more fully but some suggestions so far include a film club, nature trails, table tennis, games and activities in the hall. The great thing is that nearly everyone you talk to about this is immediately enthusiastic and usually comes up with at least one fun new idea. The intention is to start with provision for the children of the village and then widen the initiative to include other sections of the community but the priority is to get Kidz off the ground first. To that end, there will be a meeting towards the end of January when anyone can pitch in with ideas to make it work. Your Village Voice will keep you posted with information about the date and further updates between now and then but what would be most useful is for anyone with an idea, or who is prepared help with an activity, or simply wants their kids to benefit, to register their interest on the new email address. This isn’t intended to commit anyone to anything; it’s purely to make sure that everyone who is interested is kept in the loop. To register interest, please email [email protected].

CHURCH: Lucinda has written to say that there is a coffee morning and the draw of the Christmas Raffle in the Church tomorrow, December 13th, between 10.30 - 12.00.

THE MESSENGER: A few weeks ago we appealed for someone to take over the distribution of The Messenger from Pete and we are very grateful to have received two offers of help. And the first was from David Gyngell from Park Pale who will be taking over at the end of this month, delivering copies to the gallant band of deliverers. Thank you David.

BEWARE: Every week we get bulletins from the local police. Sometimes they’re useful; other times, rather less so. This week’s was just sick. We quote: “Christmas is fast approaching and the Royal Mail and The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam. A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message, you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, them please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 020 7239 6655 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111. Please be aware that the premium rate number may change, but nevertheless please do not call any number stated on a card from PDS. You should make your family, friends and neighbours aware of the above.”

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING: We were pleased when Dianne Payne gave us a guided tour of her new Christmas stock in Little Attic, her stall-within-a-shop at Poppinghole Farm Shop. Di has an interesting mix of glass, china, pewter, collectibles, curiosities and more with a good eye for retro items such as hickory-shafted golf clubs. With prices ranging from a couple of quid up to twenty pounds, it’s fun to browse and an easy source for a last minute present at an affordable price.
