Mountfield

A NICE THANK YOU: We reported on British Gypsum’s second successful families day which was held at the KGV Field at the end of last month. As a way of saying thank you for the use of the field, Tom French, the Plant Manager, has offered to replace the old circular bench round one of the big oaks at the field with a brand new teak bench. The old one is in a rather sorry state with nails sticking out so this is a pleasant and practical gesture. What a nice thank you. We’ll let you know when it has been installed.

BARBARA VALENTINE: Barbara will be doing quick portraits at St Michael’s Hospice Summer Fair on Saturday 6th September, from10.30 to 1.30. It’s always a very happy occasion, with music, food, stalls and games. Then, later in the month, the Hospice are having their ‘Fabulously Vintage Fair’ , on Saturday September 20th, from 10.00 to 4.00 and Barbara is hoping for a plentiful supply of sitters for her portraits all that day. (St Michael’s have a really good calendar of other events besides these. For more details, look at their Events Diary on www.stmichaelshospice.org.) Barbara and Juliette are looking forward to their art classes starting again for the Autumn Term on Tuesday 16th September in the Village Hall. Juliette’s portrait classes are on Tuesday mornings and Barbara’s Art Workshops are on Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. They are offering a free first session to new students who want to try the classes to see if they like them before enrolling for the term. If you didn’t see the gallery of students’ work at the Bit of a Do back on June 1st, there is a display about the classes in Battle Library with lots of examples of the paintings done at the classes. For more information, either call Barbara or email her at [email protected].

SWINGS: We mentioned that one of the toddlers’ swings in the playground had been removed for replacement. By the time you read this, there should be two new swings in very jolly bright red and blue. Mind you, as we write, the rain is coming down in Biblical proportions so fingers crossed… The only snag is that the new swings rather show up some of the old paintwork so that’s something for the Parish Council to think about.

DATES AND REMINDERS: A reminder about Brightling Barn Dance on Saturday September 6th. There will be a BBQ, a licensed bar, and licentious dancing. There are still tickets left; contact Victoria Fraser on 880500 or Vanessa Everett on 01424 838402.

Parish Council: The next meeting of Mountfield Parish Council will be Tuesday September 9th at the usual time of 7.30. There is a full agenda and the usual adjournment when, in addition to reports from our county and district councillors — and we hope to welcome our new district councillor, Cllr. Eleanor Kirby-Green, to report on her first few weeks in the job, members of the public may raise issues or ask questions.

THE MOUNTFIELD CLUB: The Club’s Next charity quiz night will be held on Thursday 2nd October, not September as reported last week. (They got the year right though.) To enquire or book, call Steve Smith on 07720 298971. The new snooker season gets under way soon so the Club will be arranging a few friendly matches so that players can get their eye in. If you are interested, Call Steve Smith, as above.

FINALLY: We mentioned the glorious sight of the last two flying Lancasters over Mountfield. Some gremlin got to work though so the report said they were flanked by “a Spitfire and another chap in a hurry.” As you probably worked out, he wasn’t red-faced and out of breath, he was in a “Hurry” — i.e. a Hurricane.

Send me your news: As ever, if you’ve anything for the Village Voice we are on 880614 (evenings please) or [email protected].
