By the time you read this, work should have started on U6413 otherwise known officially as Mountfield Lane or unofficially as Kent Lane (April 24). Highways have delivered letters to all residents and businesses along the lane together with Access Permits for every car. We have a spare supply of these permits if you were somehow missed. If you need one (or more) give us a call. We will charge very reasonable rates and will consider spreading the cost over several payments. I’m sure we will quickly get into the swing of working out where the actual point of closure will be on any given day and working round that. The only thing you need to watch out for is any deliveries you may be expecting. Most courier vans can reverse and find sensible turning places but it would be a problem for HGVs and horse boxes. Warn suppliers and customers when you can. Often neighbours will be happy to take in parcels for you though there’s no way we will be filling our fridge with anyone else’s Tesco Direct order.

As ever, common sense and patience will see us through. And when it’s all finished, we’re going to organise illegal road racing outside the entrance to Baldwins Farm.

Also, by the time you read this, the Extraordinary Council Meeting on the Southern Water planning application will have taken place (April 22). We will report on that next week.

We recently attended a meeting at which one of the speakers was Inspector James Scott who reported that no less than two million quid has been scammed from folk — and they are mostly elderly folk — across the county. If you have vulnerable family or neighbours, do make sure they never give any bank details over the phone.

Next we have this report from Pete Edwards on the Hastings and St. Leonards Bowman:

“Well they say thirteen is lucky for some. Sunday thirteenth April was the day of our Annual Tournament on the King George Vth Field. Best day of the year so far, perfect conditions for archery. The field looked great — thanks to Tim Tidmarsh for that. Everyone from the club turned up by eight to carry out their various assignments, archers turning up soon after to take advantage of the fry ups on sale.

“At ten fifteen, the competition started, at sixty yards first, and as expected some high scores started coming in. After this, a one hour break for free soup and bread with cakes and bread pud on sale and more of them fry ups. After lunch, two more distances to shoot: fifty yards and forty yards, seven and a half dozen arrows overall. At the end, we had some cracking scores. Quite a few PBs, especially from the inexperienced archers shooting their first tournament.

“The archers came from all over Kent and Sussex, fifty-five in all, and all had a great day. Next were the raffle prizes and then the medals. This year all the medals were sponsored by Colin Harmer and we thank him very much for that. Everyone had a great day — high scores, looking forward to next year already.”

“On Monday evening (April 15), the snooker singles semi-finals were held at the Club. The first semi-final took in excess of two hours with the 2012 club champion Pete Last beating club captain Steve smith 2-1. In the other semi-final, Ashley Sutton beat Alex Gray 2-1 and reaches his first club final. The doubles semi-finals are due to be completed next week. Dates for the finals will be confirmed next week. A date for the table tennis tournament will be given by the end of the week and dates for the forthcoming family quiz night and Club presentation night will be announced soon.
