Moves to make school route safer

THE SAFETY of children travelling to their new school site was discussed at a special meeting.

White House Primary School pupils moved into a new building in Marshfoot Lane, Hailsham, on April 21.

The children use a temporary footpath in Vicarage Lane car park to get to the school.

The youngsters also use a crossing in Marshfoot Lane.

Two weeks ago Sol Mead, chairman of governors, and headteacher Heather Baldwin told the Express the route to the school was dangerous.

They met councillors and representatives from East Sussex County Council and Wealden District Council to discuss the issues.

Mr Mead said the meeting was constructive.

All parties will now go away and undertake separate reviews of the access problems before meeting together again.

Mr Mead said: 'It was the first time everybody involved has actually talked about all the issues together.

'We have got things moving.

'Myself, the other governors and the school are quite frustrated about the amount of time it has taken, and it is disappointing that this did not take place months and months ago prior to the school opening.

'Then we would have avoided all the problems.'

At the meeting it was agreed the temporary footpath in Vicarage Lane car park would become semi-permanent during the review period.

The school's lollipop lady, who worked at the old school, is also being re-employed in Marshfoot Lane.

A traffic assessment is to be carried out in Marshfoot Lane.

The school moved to the new building so Tesco could build a store at the school's old site in North Street.
