Movie buffs lend their support to threatened Picturedrome

A group of cinema buffs will be visiting Bognor Regis to lend their support to the threatened Picturedrome.

The 50-strong group from the Cinema Theatre Association will be based in the town during March 21 and 22 to visit picture houses in the area.

The association aims to preserve and support past and present cinemas. It has more than 1,400 members and is active around the UK.

Based at the Royal Norfolk Hotel, those enthusiasts in Bognor will begin by exploring buildings such as the Picturedrome, Crown Bingo (formerly the Odeon), the Regis School of Music and the Regis Centre.

They will move on to Littlehampton and Chichester. Local historian Sylvia Endacott will start their weekend with an illustrated talk.

The Observer reported last month how the future of the Picturedrome was in doubt because of a rent row between the current operator and building's owner.

The two sides remain deadlocked.

The Alexandra Theatre could be swept away in a redevelopment scheme but this has been delayed by up to three years, as reported recently.
